Description

With the addition of Gisborne to VDL Stud’s string of stallions, the circle is complete for the top sport stallion bred by family Van de Lageweg.
Sire Zirocco Blue VDL is among the very best breeding stallions of his generation. Famous offspring of Zirocco Blue VDL include Hans-Dieter Dreher’s Elysium, Henrik von Eckermann’s Glamour Girl, Devin Ryan’s Eddie Blue and Rolf-Göran Bengtsson’s Zuccero. Gisborne VDL’s dam is the highly successful mare Alpen Roos VDL. She in turn unites the valuable genes of Nimmerdor son Goodtimes, the French VDL stallion Hold Up Premier and celebrities such as Ramiro and Ladykiller xx.

In breeding, Alpen Roos VDL already produced the international Grand Prix showjumper Fancy Roos VDL, who achieved great successes with both James Billington and Alex Gill. Furthermore, her pedigree goes back to the famous mare Shoraya, who stood at the base of numerous top international horses, including Olympic silver medallist Bubalu VDL.

Palmares

Gisborne VDL himself was already a huge talent as a young horse and successfully competed at the World Championships for young show jumpers in Lanaken as a 7-year-old under the Swedish flag. Later on, the Zirocco Blue VDL son left for Ariel Grange’s stables and in 2023 Daniel Coyle took over the reins from Canadian Hyde Moffat. With the Irish top rider, Gisborne VDL finished soon second in the CSI3* Grand Prix of Wellington, before finishing fourth in his first CSI5* 1.60m Grand Prix in Wellington. This was followed by a win in the 1.50m in Vancouver and also a victory in the Nations Cup. In Rotterdam, Daniel Coyle and Gisborne VDL contributed to the Irish team’s second place in the Nations Cup and furthermore, there was a top placing in one of the competitions at the Global Champions Tour in Riesenbeck. There were also significant successes for the duo in Hickstead and Dublin. Daniel Coyle’s trainer Jeroen Dubbeldam took over the reins of Gisborne VDL for the CSI3* show in Leeuwarden, where they won both the Grand Prix qualifier and the Grand Prix.
